Hi once again folks, here is another update and as we always say if this is your first visit to us then it’s a very special welcome to you, we hope you like what you see and that you find the site is of some benefit. Fishing News
Well we were expecting March to come roaring in but as it was the great storm veered right and crossed into France well south of the UK and as a result gave us little more than a bit of a blow, since then spring has truly sprung at least it has here in the south west with some fabulous weather and some good fishing to boot. Many boats around the country are going back in the water after there winter lay ups and those on the channel coast are targeting the spring Pollack. We can report that the first Mackerel has been landed in Mounts Bay Penzance on a half day trip by Capriole on Saturday 6th March 2010 there are plenty of sprat about at this time but we may have a poor run of Mackerel this year if reports of the huge takes by a large Scottish trawler are true. (See ‘The Mackerel aren't coming’ on the ‘Fishy Yarns Page’ from Friday onwards) Last Saturday evening Channel Four broadcast the film documentary ‘The End of the Line’ it’s a must see for any one serious about the future of our sport we have a take on this on the Political Page. The good news is however that many of you are again getting out to sea and catching some fish as can be seen in the reports that will be posted on Friday, sorry for the delay but I’m taking advantage of the weather to get out fishing.

Report from Skipper Dave Harrison
Friday 19th February, We enjoyed another very good day's fishing on the mid-Channel wrecks, aboard my boat "Gemini", out of Dartmouth, with Mike Wood's charter , of the group of lads from Southport, who have been fishing with me for over 10 years. We were fishing for Pollack in the winter. They also come down for a couple of days, seeking that big conger in the summer. We fished 2 wrecks today. Our best fish caught by Dave Wetherby, (pictured above) weighed just less than 19 lbs. |

We were enjoying great fishing on Duke IV early in January with a fish a chuck, Whiting, Pout and Dogs and amongst all this the Cod. They seemed to be very mobile, here one day somewhere else the next. A strong tide stream was when you got the Cod. The smaller fish would slow off and then up comes a Cod then maybe a couple more then back to the smaller stuff, the tide slackens so we move find a bit more tide and we are back amongst the Cod. Keeps the fishing interesting and we are lucky here at Ramsgate with the English Channel meeting the Thames Estuary and the North Sea on our doorstep there is always a good tide somewhere. Lug and Squid the bait of choice with whole Squid next. Then the sprats moved in! I have never seen them so thick! The sounder would show a constant line of them around 15 feet below the surface, then the screen would show them on s the seabed, so thick are they in places. With all this fodder around it’s hardly surprising that the Cod along with everything else has come up in the water to feed on them, totally ignoring our baits. The fish I think are here but we can’t catch much at the moment. The upside of this situation is that the fish are having a good feed and putting on weight so we can look forward to some good Cod fishing when the sprats move on, this should be anytime now! Where do all those sprats go the rest of the year? Plenty of spent Skate purse’s on the beach so the Skate must be here, although we are only getting the odd one. The weather hasn’t helped either, with the water temps dropping to around 41'f. Skate will move into the area in large numbers throughout Feb and March and good catches are possible. They are still an ‘at risk species’ so its good policy to return what’s not required in particular the females, every little helps as they say! |

Just under a Cornish County record this 2lb 0oz 8dr Cuckoo Wrasse put Plymouth boy Richard in the money on a trip last Sunday 21st Feb which saw a mixture of fortunes on a day that the fish were playing hard to get but we had a good bag of Pollack around the ten pound mark that made it all worth while. |

There is another superb report from our friends at Madpolka posted to the net click here to take a look at it in full. Suffice to say the lads had a day typical of the time of year with many good winter Pollack and the cracking Ling pictured left.
Skipper Collin Penny goes on to report that the inshore reef trips have produced plenty of Congers along with Blonde Rays, Bull Huss, Smooth Hounds, Whiting and the usual Dogs fish and Pouting. |

Report from Barry Luxton
First trip of the year with Terry, skipper of Seabreeze 3 Also aboard is Will, skippers mate, very interesting character he is a very competent angler and always on hand to help out. He is a cousin of Mick Fleetwood and is a very good guitar player and singer himself.
Weather was great for the time of year, so Terry decided to steam out for a distance of 35 mile. Your right Bob, I was bad, although within the video there was a good lot of double figure Pollack coming aboard, I was useless. At last they started biting for me, twice in rapid succession I was taken into the wreck and cut off. Much to the merriment, of Terry and Will.
Anyway, at long last I hooked one, that was with the help of Will who had tied a new leader for me ( I was soo busy you see) and Terry who took me rubber bait off and put a new jelly worm on me hook, he felt so sorry for me by then. So to save the day up came my only decent Pollack, what a relief Terry and Will kindly did some expert editing of the video to cut out my explanative from the film and made me look like a seasoned angler, thanks guys, phew.
So well done to Dave Percy who put me to shame with his excellent 22lb’er (Pictured above). It was a very good laugh honest, I can't wait for the next trip so I can put things right. Cheers guys. Regards Barry

After a slow start with just mainly whiting on the boat, we had a flurry right at the end of the day, so we decided to fish on for a while and ended up with 9 cod for our troubles. On the right that's not an under size Cod, the chap didn't want to feel left out having not caught a Cod so he proudly held up his best whiting. |

Pollack have started to show on the offshore wrecks and although the weather is still playing havoc with a lot of trips being cancelled. The days that we have sailed have been top notch with good numbers of specimens to around 20lb being taken with shads sidewinders and good old fashion red gills all taking fish. Pictured is Steve Humperson a regular onboard with an example of what’s been caught. |

Over the next few days I will be putting together our own yellow pages where we will list every boat that is or has been featured on the site, we currently have some seventy boats to list. We will provide the contact info location and a little about the fishing that can be had on these boats. As always there will be links to the relevant web sites etc. For all you skippers out there please note that this like our reports is a free service and you can be a part of it, simply get in touch and we will do the rest. This will require us making a telephone call to you so that we can make sure we have the right information about your boat and the type of fishing you provide. To get in touch click here for internet explorer service or email ‘bobshotter@rodbenders.net’ |
