Report by Bob Shotter 10th July 2009
My four preceding Shark trips had produced just one near miss. This trip however was to make up for it big time even though it was not me that actually made the catch, other than on camera. My good friend Robin ‘Chippy’ Chapman who is getting quite a reputation as a top sharking skipper and can boast seven sharks from the first two trips the season, invited me to join a small group of anglers who had booked the boat for a day sharking out of Penzance. We set up our drift some six miles south of Lands End on a slight sea the sky was over cast and an approaching storm forecast for the next day started to make it’s presence felt as the day went on. A sent trail was set up with the use of a bag of frozen Scad in a couple of laundry baskets, where it was pummeled with a pick axe handle, the four rods were then set up with a mackerel flapper and float and sent out from the boat the first and furthest from the boat set at around sixty feet, in the light tide conditions no sinker weights were used. The seven anglers had drawn numbers and a change round every hour would provide a fair chance for all on board. I drew number one and as fate would have it just after the change over we noticed the sea birds were not settling on the water. Sure enough moments later rod number one screamed of though only for a short while, had the shark taken and dropped the bait? After a minute that seemed like twenty we saw another run and Chippy struck home the hook and handed the rod to the young lad (Josh) who’s turn it was on the number one rod. After some ten minutes he had brought the shark within sight of the boat which in turn sent it on a deep run. Clearly this was going to be to much for the young inexperienced lad so the skipper took charge of the situation and moments later it was Josh’s dad that was to take over. The estimated weight was at first thought to be around 80 lbs but as the fight went on this increased to 100 lb then as we caught sight of this beautiful creature we could see it was all of that and possibly more. Still the fight was not over and the shark dived again some eight or nine times before Chippy managed to heave it aboard for a quick de hook and photo call before being returned. As stated I did catch the all of the action on film and we have it for you to download in full mpeg DVD quality or you can use the poorer streaming quality should you not want to or have the space to save it on your computer. I would point out that we recommend the use of the VLC media player for m-peg viewing. It’s available free and plays many of the files that you will find windows media player ether struggles with or wont play at all. News Report by Bob Shotter Sunday 6th September 2009
Just by chance I was able to join Nigel and a small grope of anglers booked on one of the Wave Chieftain sharking trips on Sunday The weather was not to good but Nigel said it might be ok and was worth a look as the forecast was not due to worsen until much later. So armed with my trusty camera and my still virgin Sharking gear we set off from Mylor Harbour nr Falmouth We travelled about 18miles to start our drift having caught some mackerel on route but we were still only about ten miles off shore Once the drift was set up Jason and Richard who fished the Penzance event with us, put out a small bait for Gar fish and landed a few and I fished the bottom with baited feathers and had two nice Ling a Pollack, Cuckoo Wrasse and some Whiting However the big moment came about an hour into the drift when one of the rods burst into action with a nice 55lb Blue Shark taking line at a rate of knots. Once Nigel had set the hook Jason and Richard took it in turns to bring the fish to the boat. Nicely lip hooked the fish was quickly measured and returned with little damage. We didn't get another take and called it a day a little early as the wind was picking up and one of the two lads from Liverpool (Ged and Dave) had been unwell for most of the day. Film of the catch is at the end of our September 2009 news report film which includes the Penzance open comp. Click here to download it This is an m-peg two file and may take a while to download but its worth the wait. |
