Posted on 15th December 2009 Here are the highlights of the fishing events from the past twelve months on the site
January was a very quiet month with nothing significant to report indeed it was not until February that saw a strange picture from Wave Chieftain of a Conger that had got it’s self in a bit of a mess. |
Fortunately Skipper Nigel Hodge was able to resolve the problem and the fish was returned to the sea where it swam away quite happily.
In Weymouth Dorset we had an open meeting with the CFO from The Southern Sea Fisheries and the local skippers of both RSA and the under twelve meter commercial boats and a motion that we at Rodbenders had proposed to try and resolve the long running bitter dispute relating to the use of some RSA charter boats and the 12 meter rule in the district. While our idea which was debated on the evening did not get any support, the meeting did at least get both sides of the dispute talking and a resolve to the situation may now be achieved.
March and April again did not produce much in the way of notable catches from any of the angling undertaken during the period but the politics of the UK marine bill and the E U Article 47 continued to cause lots of comment among those heavily involved in our sport. Personally I found the clever send up that some one had put together both very funny and actually summed up the situation very well. If you have not seen it or would like to see it again Click here to view it
During April Rodbenders HQ moved west to Cornwall as I wanted to be closer to what I believe is probably one of the UK’s best fishing areas as the county boast not only the longest coast line by far but has the diversity of both Channel and Atlantic fishing. The South and North coast being very different in respect to some species of fish that are found there. I have still to sample the North coast since moving but intend to rectify that this coming year.

So into May and at last the fishing reports really started to flow and one in particular that of the annual battle between two of the top Weymouth boats Flamer III (Collin Penny) and Lady Godiva (Dave Gibson) |

BBC1's Breakfast Programme reporter Richard Westcott has been investigating the impact that the proposed EEC Article 47 will have on Recreational Sea Anglers and in particular the UK Charter Fleet. The programme shown on Wednesday the 18th March contained an interview with Andy Selby (Weymouth Angling Centre) and the PBA's Dave Gibson, who is also the skipper of Weymouth Charter Boat 'Lady Godiva' The shoot was done aboard Tiger Lily and our picture shows Cameraman Grant Henderson, reporter, Richard Westcott, Dave Gibson and Andy Selby. |

On Tiger Lily from Weymouth Helping out with numbers on the Sunday Wrecker were brothers, Barry and Richard Luxton from Rochester in Kent. Pictured with two nice fish for their trouble are Barry (left), partner in a Construction Firm, and Richard who works in a Paper Mill. Thanks for helping out chaps |
March and April also did of course see a decent run of Spring Pollack particularly for the Devon Boats |

Round one of the "Lady Godiva versus Flamer Challenge 2009" competition series took place as scheduled on Friday 17th April, This was the first of the five comps that will decide which boat wins the coveted "Top Boat Shield", round one was a flatfish only competition and as such was probably one of the more challenging of the series. |

The first trips to the Channel Island of Alderney also saw some cracking flat fish like this... |

There was a new Red Cat ‘Trio III’ running out of Langston one of five new cats to operate from the harbour this year and we whish skipper ‘Bumble’ well as he’s such a nice guy. |
The fishing to saw many of the late spring early summer fish show up Black Bream were every where and the Cod were on the Brittle Star ground to the west of the IOW |

With the arrival of June came the first of the Summer Predators the Blue Shark and the start of what was to be a good season for Shark fishing in general Reports from Wales Cornwall and Hampshire of good catches came in right up to a record breaker in October |
Conger monsters and super flatties were the order of the days in Devon |

While in Portishead and around the IOW it was the Smooth Hounds tugging anglers lines. |

July and high summer or was it the wind picked up and the summer weather was not so good but the fish kept coming with a 95lb Conger for Valkyrie IV out of Langston Big Bass for the Poole boat Silver Spray along with some nice Blond Rays while down west there was Haddock and near record Weaver fish being caught.
The wind blew but look at the joy on the faces of these young anglers in Devon with there Gars, Mackerel, Huss and Wrasse |

Fly fishing for Bass was the evening pursuit for Anglers on White Huntress in the Solent while Tope was the day time target |

August was to produce a spectacular fish probably the winner of the fish of the year for John Mazey an 8lb 9oz John Dory caught on Tiger Lily from Weymouth while fishing in the waters around Alderney. At 360% specimen it will take some beating |
Cod Ling and Pollack dominated the reports during the month in which the wind played a major part but Plaice Rays and Bream were all caught in numbers. The Shark to kept taking the bait with a total of twelve in one day on Bite from Penzance |
